Closely Examination of the Harbour

Marina Grande harbour lays on the northern coast of the islands, about a quarter of mile north west from Capri's  urban centre. It is composed of two breakwater wharfes and of  two underwawes pennants which enclose a western dock essentially reserved to commercial and fishing trades and an eastern one used as a touristic harbour. The common opening is towards north-north east and it is signalled on the right side with a winking green light (frequence 3 S., range 5 M.) and with a fixed red light (range 2M.). The harbour's dock is open to boats and ships until 100  mts. lenght with draught not over 10 mts.Moorings are well sheltered from the sirocco ando from the southwest wind, but they are exposed to the first quadrant's winds (which provoke surf) and to the northern ones. In the zone facing the opening, moorage and fishing are forbidden. Crafts waiting for instructions from the local maritime authority or unable to land for lack of free moorings can fasten roadstead north west from the harbour considering that depth at 300 mts. from the coast is only  30 mts. and with northern winds landing becomes dangerous. Important indications can be drawn by the peaks edging the island's coasts - mostly high and abrupt - and precisely from  Punta Carena with its lighthouse (red octagonal tower, winking white light, frequence  5 S. range 22 M. ) and from Capo Tiberio (north eastern end) with the homonymous lighthouse situated on the top of  the near rock named " la Longa di Mezzogiorno" (white candlestick placed on a small reserve; three groups of winking white light, frequence 10 S. range 11 M.).
