Casa Rossa The
casa rossa, an unique edifice of
eclectic style, has been constructed by the American General J. C. MacHowen, who
settled in Capri after the American Civil War. The building is fascinating by a
quadratic tower of the sixteenth century, in which – after traditional legend
– the Anacapris locked in their wifes, for fear that the women could be
harassed by the Capresis, while the men must have been gone to work to the royal
arsenals in Neaple. The
building contains an exhibition of archaelogic objects and is investing a court
yard. Its premises don’t follow any architectonic rules, but their own
inspiration, associating ideas and imitation. At the entrance you will find a
Greek phrase, which welcomes you in the town of
“Dolce Far Niente” – the sweet idleness: Apragopoli How
do you reach it: from Anacapri, Piazza Vittoria, you may get to the building –
now private – whithin walking distance in five minutes, following the Viale G.
