The castle of Barbarossa


Antique, defensive structures, partially concealed in the incline of the mountain, on which it fortifies. It has been constructed in defence of the attacks to Anacapri. In addition to its military compactness, it is extremely difficult to reach, interfered with the boarder of the eastern projected declivity of the Monte Solare and with the precipitousness of the terrain. Attributes, which didn’t hinder the African corsair Khair-ed-Din, called Barbarossa, to capture it in the year of 1534, in the course of one of his most terrible expeditions to the middle Tirreno. Once, the pirate has taken possession of the fortress, he devastated it with fire and sword, destroyed it completely and made it practically useless. The fortress with quadratic floor-plan probably has been constructed between the X and the XII century. It has a central building, devided in projected bodies, two solid defensive towers, which protect the inside, and extends to the projected declivity, in a height of 434 m.
