San Michele Church

This monumental distinctive church from Anacapri is in San Nicola Square, at 10 minutes of going from Vittoria Square. Wished by nun Serafina in honour of Archangel Michele, the church is one among the clearest examples of buildings of  XVIIIth century. Projected by A. Vaccaro, it presents a central building, dome with octagonal plane and arches at cross extremity, superposed at theirs turn over other four smaller, where open a few apse niches. However, main attention of visitor is attracted by splendid majolica floor  representing the chasing of Adam and Eve from earthly paradise, built in 1761 as work of Leonardo Chiaiese.

In work are present numerous  representations of animals even exotic, as leopards, crocodiles and lions. Main scene (the chasing) seems does’t interest the animals, with the exception of unicorn, who appears in inferior part of picture. Examining the picture  from above it is obtained a more light vision of work. According to Douglas, the inspiration was given to Chiaiese by a picture of Solimena, author also of a few pictures, present in church.
