During the nineteenth century, Capri island was attacked first by English (1806) and later by the by French troops (1808). The construction of these forts, that linked Grotta Azzurra to Punta Carena, occurred as a consequence of these events. Similar structures were built in Orrico, Mesola and Pino and other two of them for defensive purposes were raised one in Tombosiello cove and another in Damecuta zone.
Orrico fort:
its name comes from the Greek term orica. It is easy
of access from the sea and it was right here that French and English
troops landed.
Mesola fort:
it is the main of these kind of structures on the island and it lies between
Orrico and Pino forts. Rests of tufa stones were found during the repairs; they
were used by the Romans , though it is common opinion that the fort was built by
the English.
Pino fort:
this fort was presumably built on old medieval structures. It is made up of
thick walls and it involves a basin used for collecting rain water. It lies on
the western coast of the island. ...
