Villa San Michele

The Villa S. Michele where the famous doctor Axel Munthe lived from 1896 till 1910, is situated on the north-eastern slope of Anacapri at about 327 mt. of altitude. Before being turned into a splendid frame for the Swede's collections it was a Roman villa which ruines still remain in its marvellous garden. Nowdays it has been skillfully transformed in a museum which contains different historical remains of Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian epoques. Among them, the Head of Medusa; a marble bust representing a figure of Tiberius; and the Egyptian Sphinx. In the garden it's possible to admire the characteristic plants of the Meditarranean flora and the original plants of other latitudes as well. The soul of the construction is well reflected in Munthe's famous words: "…my house has to be open to the sun, to the wind, to the light of the sea like a Greek temple; and light, light, light everywhere!" How to reach the Villa: from Anacapri, having arrived at Piazza Vittoria, it's enough to take the Viale Axel Munthe.
